Car finance with bad credit in Brisbane
A default or a discharged bankruptcy narrows which lenders will consider you. It rarely ends the conversation. What changes is which lenders see the file and what the money costs — and in a city where a work ute is often the thing that earns the income, the timing of that decision matters.
Want to know what you qualify for? The enquiry takes about a minute and there's no credit check to find out.
Get my quotesHow lenders actually read a damaged file
Assessment is more granular than a single score suggests. A small telco default from four years ago, since paid, is a very different signal to a recent default on a vehicle loan — the second speaks directly to the obligation you are now asking for.
Timing does a lot of the work. Defaults remain on your file for five years. Bankruptcy stays five years from the date you became bankrupt or two years from discharge, whichever is later. Serious credit infringements sit for seven. As these age, both the number of lenders willing to look and the terms you are offered improve, often noticeably.
If you have never held credit at all, that is a thin file rather than a bad one — nothing negative, but nothing positive either, and the lender is pricing an unknown. It is generally an easier problem to solve.
The Brisbane version of the timing question
Elsewhere, waiting six months for a default to age is straightforwardly good advice. Here it is complicated by how many people need the vehicle to work — a tradie without a ute is not earning, and a cheaper car that cannot carry the tools is not a substitute.
If the vehicle is the income, the sensible frame is not 'wait or don't wait' but 'what is the smallest, shortest commitment that keeps me working, which I can refinance once the file improves'. That is a legitimate strategy and worth saying out loud to whoever assesses the application.
What strengthens a marginal application
Once you are outside mainstream criteria the assessment becomes more human and more practical:
- Whether the difficulty is genuinely behind you — a default during a period out of work that has since ended reads very differently to current arrears
- Time in your job or trading history, and time at your address; stability counts heavily
- A deposit, which lowers the lender's exposure and shows you can save
- A sensible vehicle choice — a reliable used ute is a far easier approval than a prestige purchase
- Genuine headroom in your budget once existing commitments are counted honestly
Common questions
Will enquiring make my credit worse?
Not with us. We assess your situation and match you to lenders without a hard credit enquiry, so the enquiry itself leaves no mark. What does damage a file is applying directly to several lenders in a short period — each one records an enquiry, and a cluster of them reads badly to the next lender who looks.
I'm currently in a payment plan. Does that rule me out?
Not automatically. A payment arrangement you are meeting is a better signal than an ignored debt, and some lenders treat it that way. Current arrears you are not meeting are much harder. Be straightforward about where things actually stand — it gets you to the right lender faster than a hopeful version does.
How long after bankruptcy can I get car finance?
Some lenders will consider an application once you are discharged, though terms reflect the risk. Options broaden considerably once the bankruptcy drops off your file entirely, which is five years from when you became bankrupt or two years from discharge, whichever is later.
