Ute and 4WD finance in Brisbane

Brisbane buys dual cabs and wagons harder than any other capital, and it genuinely changes what you are offered. A vehicle that holds its value is better security, and lenders price security. It is one of the few situations where the more expensive car is the easier approval.

Why a ute can be an easier approval than a hatchback

A car loan is secured against the vehicle. If the loan goes bad, what the lender recovers depends on what the car is worth at that point — not what you paid for it.

A HiLux, Ranger or D-Max holds value unusually well in Queensland, where demand for them is deep and constant. A small city car depreciates faster and sells into a thinner market. The result surprises people: the same borrower, same income, same credit file, is sometimes offered better terms on a $55,000 dual cab than on a $28,000 hatch, because the lender's downside is better covered.

It is not a reason to buy more car than you need. It is a reason not to assume a cheaper vehicle automatically means an easier yes.

Work use changes the structure, not just the paperwork

If the vehicle is genuinely used for business, a consumer car loan may not be the right product. Chattel mortgage and commercial hire purchase exist for exactly this, and they are assessed differently — often on the business rather than on you personally.

The distinction matters at application time, because switching later usually means starting again. Tell the specialist how the vehicle will actually be used, including the rough split between work and private, before anything is submitted.

The tax treatment differs too, and that is genuinely your accountant's call rather than ours. We can tell you which structures your situation opens up. We cannot tell you what they will do to your return, and anyone in finance who offers to is out of their lane.

What lenders look at on a work vehicle

Beyond the usual income and credit assessment, a few things are specific to utes and 4WDs:

  • Accessories and fit-out — a canopy, bull bar or tray may or may not be included in the financed amount, and dealer-fitted extras are treated differently to aftermarket ones
  • Whether the vehicle is new, ex-demo or used, which changes both the rate band and the maximum term
  • Age at the end of the term — many lenders cap how old a vehicle may be when the loan finishes, which quietly limits the term available on an older 4WD
  • Genuine business use, if you are applying on that basis, usually evidenced by an active ABN and often GST registration
  • Modifications, particularly lifts and engine work, which some lenders will not finance at all

Common questions

Can I finance a ute through my ABN?

Usually, if the ABN is active and the vehicle is genuinely used in the business. Some lenders want the ABN held for a minimum period, commonly a year or two, and some will consider a newer ABN with stronger evidence elsewhere. It is worth mentioning the ABN even if you also earn PAYG income, because it can open products a consumer loan application would not reach.

Does a canopy or bull bar get included in the loan?

Often, if it is fitted by the dealer and appears on the contract of sale. Accessories you buy separately afterwards generally sit outside the finance. If the fit-out is a significant cost, raise it before the loan amount is set rather than after.

Will a lift kit or engine modification stop me getting finance?

It can. Some lenders decline modified vehicles outright, others assess them case by case, and a few are comfortable with mild, engineer-certified work. If the vehicle is already modified, say so upfront — a decline discovered late is worse than a shorter list of lenders known early.
